A survey of British golfers has found that the majority believe that golf journalism in national newspapers is not good enough.
The HowDidiDo poll of 2,260 members of golf clubs found that 84 per cent of respondents do not think stories that appear in national newspapers are good or better than average. More than half (53 per cent) feel they are below average.
Tabloids fared particularly badly. When asked which were the best newspapers for golf coverage, the Daily and Sunday Express, Daily and Sunday Mirror and the Daily Star received just 11 per cent of the votes between them.
At the other end of the scale, 30 per cent of respondents believed the Daily and Sunday Telegraph provided the best golf coverage.
A staggering 98 per cent of respondents agreed with the comment that ‘golf is not a priority for the national sporting press’.
HowDidiDo’s managing director, Barry Dyett, said: “It’s still the middle-class newspapers that dominate.
“Does this suggest that tabloid editors believe their readership does not play or has no interest in golf? You’d have to ask them that, but, if so, it’s a pretty anachronistic view. There are an estimated four million golfers in this country and not all of them read the Telegraph. I think they’re missing a trick here.”
